We are 100% community driven and run by women around the UK. We place constantly stocked Red Boxes of sanitary wear in schools for young women to access, aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items. The Luton project has been set up by Joan Bailey and is operated under the Safer Luton Partnership with the help of family and friends. Our aim is to provide free sanitary products to Luton High Schools where any young woman who does not have access to these basic requirements and missing school every month because they may be embarrassed can get free supplies. Women all across the UK have set up local projects. They fund-raise, collect, have craft sales and donation drives, all to make sure their boxes never became empty. Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Victims and Witnesses Champion This project is managed by The Safer Luton Partnership (SLP) and is funded through the London Luton Airport Community Fund and is delivered through a Service Level agreement (SLA) with Luton Borough Council (LBC). The project is based on the previously funded Victims and Witnesses Champion work as part of the Justice Seen Justice Done Campaign, a cross government programme to address public concerns about crime and justice, while raising the public’s awareness and understanding of the services they are entitled to from the police and other agencies, including those for victims. The overall aim of this project is to deliver practical help and support to those who are victims or witnesses of ASB. Over the years the ASB Victims and Witnesses Project has gone through several changes to enable us to support the most vulnerable victims and witnesses of ASB in Luton. The Project is currently based with the Priority ASB Team. The Priority ASB Team is now well established, and we continue to work as a team. The assessment matrix has ensured that we are supporting the most vulnerable victims of ASB. The project works in close partnership with Bedfordshire Police, LBC, and social housing providers in Luton. We currently accept referrals from the Priority ASB Team, Bedfordshire Police Signpost Hub, Local Community Policing Teams, LBC Investigation Hub, LBC Housing and Self-Referrals. The ASB Victims and Witnesses Champion has become an integral component of Luton’s ASB victim’s response services. We can come out to your school college or youth and community group to talk about the different setting up peer education project. Peer Education A peer educator is someone who wants to learn about a topic and shares this information with other young people Young people may not want to listen to parents, carers or teachers but would prefer to listen to another young person You do not need a qualification to become a peer educator however you will receive training A peer educator is someone who wants to learn and develop new skills Specialist training is provided by the SLP or one of its partners agencies so that young people can deliver confidently on a range of topics. To date these have included: - smoking, alcohol, drugs, sexual health or bullying to name just a few. Peer Mentoring The peer mentoring scheme is aimed at training young people aged 18 to 24 to undertake a specialist programme of work so that they can be matched with and support an individual who may have a range of complex problems. Some but not all these young people may be offending or at risk of offending. Many have family problems, are underachieving at school or maybe not attending any formal education or training programmes. Several our mentors have themselves benefited from the service as a young person and have returned to help and support someone who may have found themselves in similar circumstances. Peer Mediation This is a much-specialised area of work and as such we do not so this in isolation. We draw on the expertise of those involved in this area of work. Young people must be chosen carefully and undergo very sensitive training to act as mediators. In many circumstances they are working with victims of bullying and the bully. We have been successful in supporting several young people who are dealing with a range of conflicts in the lives. Peer Mediation forms a part of a focused service being delivered in the townby Luton Mediation. Our training is delivered by a range of staff with expertise in these fields.
