Community Development

Community development is fundamentally based on the values of human rights, social justice, equality and respect for diversity. The principles which underpin its practice are: Self-determination since people and communities have the right to make their own choices and decisions. Community development has an explicit focus on the redistribution of power to address the causes of inequality and disadvantage.

The SLP believes that we should be facilitators of community action and in doing so we work with different types of community groups to enable this to happen so that communities can bring about change. These may include:

  • Interest. Communities of people who share the same interest or passion.

  • Action. Communities of people trying to bring about change.

  • Place. Communities of people brought together by geographic boundaries.

  • Practice. Communities of people in the same profession or undertake the same activities.

Our community projects include training and supporting community ambassadors who work in local neighbourhoods to tackle issues like hate crime and community conflicts. They bring people together for community events to build new friendships and tackle issues around cohesion. We offer mediation in the community and support victims of crime.

Our Community Development Team is led by Ryan Joseph a qualified youth and community worker who gained his qualification at the University of Bedfordshire. He has post 5 years’ experience of delivering youth and community work and is experienced in outreach and detached models of youth work.
